After 3 decades, Nedi has stood down as president of the ladies auxiliary committee. Happily, she will however continue as a committee member.

Where it all began……

Nedi was born in 1942 in the village of Tochni, Larnaca, Cyprus.

The village is situated in a beautiful and scenic area of Larnaca District. Its Church of St Constantine and St Helen situated over a bridge is said to have been built by St Helen during her visit to Cyprus.in 327 AD.

Nedi’s parents were Alexandros Agiotis whose family were from the village of Agioi Vavatsinias, and her mother from Tochni. She lived with her parents in Tochni until the age of 12 and then the whole family moved to Ammohostos for two and half years. Thereafter she joined her elder sister Dora Matheou in London leaving behind in Cyprus her brother Laki and sister Fotini.

In London she met and married George Hajialexandrou whose family came from Neo Chorio, Paphos. They have two sons Michael and Andreas and a daughter Elena and 10 grandchildren!

On the committee…..

She regularly attended the church of our St Constantine and St Helen church with her family and soon became a member of the Ladies Auxiliary Committee, and in 1996 was elected as President of the Committee.

During her tenure she led the Committee with skill and devotion organising and carrying out philanthropic work for the ill and less fortunate people of the parish and helping the Greek School financially.

Her most notable achievement was to organise and complete the internal cleaning and repair of the stonework and brickwork in 2005/6 at a cost of £73,000, a substantial amount of money at that time (about £142,000 in 2026 money), and entirely raised from parishioners and funding raising activities.

In 2004 in collaboration with the church Committee the Ladies Committee under her leadership completed the refurbishment of the kitchen by contributing £15,000 towards the total cost.

Throughout her period as president, Nedi worked worked closely together with two presidents of the Church Committee Mr George Georgiou and Dr Andreas Andreou to achieve the best outcomes for the Parish Community. The Ladies Committee under her leadership has been a fervent proponent of the need to build the new building adjacent to the church with substantial contributions to the building fund.

Nedi would like to thank her Committee and all the members and supporters of the Ladies Auxiliary Committee for their help and support during her period as president.

Thank you Nedi…….

The Church Committee and Trustees would like to express their deep gratitude to Nedi for her hard work and dedication and cooperation towards the improvement of the offering to our parishioners, which she consistently and tirelessly carried out for 30 years.

For many of her years on the committee, Christina Brooks has worked alongside Nedi, and had this to say:

“Nethi has had an affiliation, service and love for St Helen since birth as St Helen is the Patron Saint of Toxhni, her village in Cyprus.

She has continued to serve St Helen for over 30 years, together with her husband George, who has unassumingly worked with her. They say behind every successful woman there is a man!

I would like to thank her, on behalf of all the Ladies Committee and Members for her dedication, diligence, commitment, direction and friendship.

Nedi’s dedication and organisational skills are amazing. She has been a pleasure to work with all these years, and many times we have enjoyed a good laugh whilst raising money for our beloved church and helping it to run like clockwork.

There is a lot of work to do in ensuring everything functions correctly, notably making of prosphero and all the wonderful flower arrangements we have throughout the year and most especially Easter time.

Nedi’s culinary skills are also legendary! I am so happy that I will get to continuing working with Nedi for the years to come.

She will be a tough act to follow as president, but in Eleni we have a worthy successor. 30 years Eleni!?”
